Facebook-Google Scammer Pleads Guilty in $123 Million Theft

A Lithuanian citizen has confessed to fraud against Google and Facebook. Using fake invoices, the perpetrator forced employees to transfer money to their bank accounts. In total, the attacker’s income from such activities amounted to $123 million.

As a result, 50-year-old Evaldas Rimasauskas heard his verdict in New York yesterday. Now he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Rimasauskas was arrested by Lithuanian police in March 2017, and later (in August) was extradited to the United States for charges.

The prosecution claims that the offender created a company whose name was very similar to Quanta – a supplier of data center hardware that has an impeccable reputation.

The attacker attacked Google and Facebook for the reason that both corporations had a business relationship with Quanta, which supplied them with equipment for data centers.

According to the case file, Rimasauskas sent emails to Google and Facebook that were disguised as invoices sent to Quanta. Thus, Google and Facebook had to pay for services allegedly rendered and products purchased.

The offender used a rather clever tricks, thanks to which he really managed to mislead the employees of two large American corporations.

As a result, Google has suffered $23 million, and Facebook – at $100 million.
