Indian Energy Company Tata Power Hit by Cyberattack

One of the largest energy companies in India, Tata Power Company Limited, has reported that it has been subjected to a cyberattack, possibly carried out by Chinese hackers.

The filing, which the company made with the National Stock Exchange of India, it claims that the incident only affected “some of the IT systems” and that critical infrastructure was not affected.
The company has already taken steps to fix and restore systems. All critical systems are operating as normal, but as a precaution, limited access and preventive checks have been introduced for employees and customers.say Tata Power representatives.

Let me remind you that we also wrote that Hackers leaked data from Pakistani energy company K-Electric, and also that Hackers Attack Colombia Energy and Metal Industries.

Tata Power Company Limited, citing the ongoing investigation, has not reported about the mechanism of attack or any details.

The Mumbai-based electric utility company, part of the Tata Group conglomerate, did not disclose any further details about the nature of the attack, or when it took place. The Hacker News writes.

At the same time, Recorded Future experts note that back in the spring of this year, they warned about attacks by Chinese “government” hackers that were aimed at Indian energy companies.

According to experts, then the attackers targeted at least seven Indian dispatch centers responsible for managing the network and distributing electricity. The researchers associated this activity with a threat cluster, which they track under the identifier Threat Activity Group 38 (TAG-38).

Cybersecurity experts have reported that these attacks may be designed to facilitate the collection of information related to critical infrastructure assets, or are likely a hallmark of future activity. Actually, the Tata Power Company Limited attack that took place confirms this assumption.

China has denied allegations of involvement, and rather controversially stated that “many US allies or countries with which it cooperates in the field of cybersecurity are also victims of US cyberattacks.”
