Albania and Iran Broke Off Diplomatic Relations Due to Cyberattack

Albania broke off diplomatic relations with Iran and gave 24 hours for Iranian embassy staff to leave the country’s capital, Tirana. This, according to Reuters, was announced on September 7 by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Let me remind you that we also wrote that the US Department of Justice accuses three Iranian hackers of hacking aerospace companies, and also that the UK accused governmental-sponsored Iranian hackers in cyberattack on state institutions in December 2018.

The head of Albania said that Iran tried to carry out a cyberattack against government services on July 15, accusing the Islamic Republic of intending to steal government data.

The government has decided to immediately break off diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. This response is fully proportionate to the seriousness and risk of a cyberattack that threatened to paralyze government services, hack into digital systems, expose government records, steal government intranet emails, cause havoc and compromise the security of the country.said the Albanian Prime Minister.
The in-depth investigation provided us with undeniable evidence that the cyberattack against our country was organized and sponsored by the Islamic Republic of Iran through the participation of four groups that carried out the aggression.Edi Rama explained.

According to Albanian Daily News, Albania’s position was supported by the United States, which condemned Iran for this unprecedented cyber incident.

The United States will take further action to hold Iran accountable for actions that threaten the security of a US ally and set a disturbing precedent for cyberspace.the White House National Security Council said in a statement.

Relations between Albania and Iran have been tensed since 2014, when Albania hosted some 3,000 members of the exiled opposition group, the People’s Organization of the Mujahideen of Iran, also known as the Mujahideen-e-Khalq in Farsi, who settled in a camp near Durrës, the main Albanian port.

US cybersecurity company Mandiant, which noted the hacking activity on its blog earlier this month, said a group with ties to Iran launched a sophisticated attack using malware to capture Iranian dissidents’ data.
