Pirate application CotoMovies was closed, with all data of its users has gone to copyright holders

The publication TorrnetFreak drew attention to an interesting situation around the pirate streaming application CotoMovies, which was closed the day before.

Earlier this month, a third-party iOS app store TweakBox removed several pirate apps due to legal pressure on the platform.

One of these apps was CotoMovies, which provided its users with unlimited access to pirated movies and TV shows for free. TweakBox’s threat of legal prosecution came from the company that produced the Hellboy movie.

A few days after this incident, the developer of CotoMovies announced that he stopped development of his application and the service was being closed. As the journalists found out, this decision was also associated with pressure from companies that created such films as Hellboy and Angel Fall.

It is reported that as a result, the parties were able to resolve the conflict peacefully, and although there is no exact evidence that the copyright holders were paid some compensation for the damage, the developer CotoMovies has already apologized to the creators of the mentioned films and other copyright holders on the project’s home page.

The application operator writes that he learned his lesson from what has happened and now understands what damage pirated applications cause to films.

“I want to express my sincere regret to the owners of the motion pictures Hellboy and Angel Has Fallen as well as all rights holders for inducing and contributing to copyright infringements by my operation of the app CotoMovies. From this stressful legal experience, I have learned to appreciate the damage apps such as CotoMovies do to those who invest their time, effort and money to create motion pictures. I now plan to fully respect intellectual property laws and strongly urge those who used my app to use legal apps to watch movies. To this end, I have agreed to transfer to counsel for the rights holders user data and communications under my possession and control so that they can enforce their valuable intellectual property”, — reported CotoMovies operator.

Users, of course, were disappointed, but it seems that even more unpleasant emotions associated with CotoMovies may await them in the future. The fact is that the creator of the application writes that he also agreed to transfer user data and messages to copyright holders so that they can enforce laws and monitor their valuable intellectual property.

It is not reported what kind of user data was at the disposal of the developer CotoMovies, but users can definitely get in trouble, as the creators of Hellboy and Angel Falls had previously prosecuted individual pirates in court. Lawyers for film companies have already confirmed to TorrentFreak reporters that the legal prosecution of CotoMovies users is more than likely and appears in the plans of copyright holders.
