Russia Blocks Popular VPN Services Such as Proton VPN

Users in Russia have experienced problems with NordVPN, Proton VPN, and other VPN services, and this seems to be what the Russian authorities were striving for this.

Representatives of Roskomnadzor confirmed that, within the framework of the law on the “sovereign” Runet, work is underway to block VPN services, including Proton VPN, which help bypass blocking of content recognized as prohibited in the Russian Federation.

Let me remind you that we also reported that Backbone provider Cogent disconnects Russian companies, and also that Instagram is officially blocked in Russia.

On June 2, 2022, Russian users began to report problems with various VPN services. In particular, Proton VPN users complained about connection problems, and an official message appeared on the company’s website, in which operators suggested that blocking had begun.

We are currently investigating the issue and it is not related to any changes on our part. It is likely that local ISPs and authorities are interfering with VPN connections, in which case we will not be able to resolve these issues. Some servers may continue to work. We will continue to try to bypass the lock. Thank you for your patience and understanding.Proton VPN said.

Mediazona journalists wrote that, according to user posts on social networks, similar problems are also observed in Lantern and Outline VPN.

Later it became known that NordVPN also “failed”. Thus, according to Globalcheck, the site nordvpn.com was unavailable in the networks of Rostelecom, MTS, MegaFon, Tele2, Beeline and Yota.

According to the Law on Communications, means of bypassing blocking of illegal content are recognized as a threat. The Center for Monitoring and Control of the Public Communications Network (TsMU SSOP) is taking measures to limit the operation of VPN services in Russia that violate Russian law.the ministry's press service said.

Recall that last weekend in a number of regions of Russia there were already problems with connecting to VPNs using the L2TP, IKEv2 and IPsec protocols. In particular, then problems with VPN arose in Western Siberia, Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don.

It is also worth noting that over a dozen popular VPN services were already restricted in Russia last year, including ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Hola!VPN, IPVanish VPN, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited, Speedify VPN, and so on.
