OnePlus recent update deliberately slows down 300 apps

Recently, researchers noticed that OnePlus recent update deliberately slows down 300 apps. Some applications on devices of the Chinese company OnePlus became slower after the update.

It all started with an article in AnandTech, in which researcher Andrei Frumusanu tested OnePlus 9 (11.2.6.6), and then he noticed that the phone severely restricts the work of Chrome and other popular applications.

For example, it turned out that Chrome is limited to only Cortex-A55 cores and does not use the main processing power of the Snapdragon 888 available in the more powerful A78 and X1 cores. As a result, in some tests, Chrome shows results that are 75-85% lower than expected.

We found OnePlus blacklisting popular apps, preventing them from accessing fast kernels, which slows down typical workflows like web browsing. We have confirmed that (a) benchmarks and (b) unknown applications get full performance, while the performance of most popular non-benchmark applications is noticeably reduced. Perhaps this is done to increase battery life at the expense of performance, but it means that the benchmark test results are somewhat useless in terms of user experience.writes Frumusanu.

This study drew attention to the authors of the popular benchmark application Geekbench and excluded the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro from the results, saying that they considered this behavior to be a form of test manipulation.

As a result, the events forced OnePlus representatives to give an official comment, and, oddly enough, the company confirmed the conclusions made by Andrei Frumusanu.

Ensuring the maximum user experience with our products has always been our top priority, in particular, by responding quickly to their important comments and suggestions.

In March, following the launch of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, several users told us about a number of areas where we could improve battery life and temperature management. Thanks to this feedback, our R&D team has been working for several months to optimize the performance of devices while using the 300 most popular applications, including Chrome, by aligning the processor requirements with the most suitable performance.

This helped to ensure smooth operation while reducing power consumption. While this may affect device performance in some benchmark applications, our goal, as always, is to do our best to improve the performance of our users’ devices. the company said.

At the same time, Frumusanu notes that similar behavior of OnePlus smartphones was observed earlier, and did not appear after the recent update, as the company assures. According to him, the slow operation of applications back in March was noted in reviews of new devices, for example, on the PhoneArena or NoteBookCheck sites.

Let me remind you that the Chinese authorities use AI to analyze emotions of Uyghur prisoners, and also that China officially legalized the “Social Credit System”.
