Black Theme for WhatsApp – turned out to be malicious

Cybercriminals are again attacking WhatsApp users.

This time, during a phishing attack, attackers forced victims to install a malicious extension, supposedly intended to change the color of the messenger interface.

It all starts with the fact that the user receives a message in which it is proposed to change the standard green WhatsApp interface to any other. To do this, the user is invited to install a special extension.

The attackers have provided several scenarios that depend on the victim’s operating system.

Users of the desktop version of WhatsApp are sent to download a special extension for Chrome from the official store. It is called Black Theme for WhatsApp.

If the user installs this extension, it will automatically send the offer to change the design of WhatsApp to the list of contacts and group chats.

This extension is still in the Chrome online store. Almost 16 thousand users have already downloaded it.

How to remove “Black Theme for WhatsApp”:

The easiest method to remove “Black Theme for WhatsApp” is to run an anti-malware program. You may try GridinSoft Anti-Malware. It’s good at detecting and removing adware and other PUPs (potentially unwanted programs).
